Samsung s upcoming flagship smartphone, Galaxy S8, will reportedly be launched in two display sizes. The successor to the Galaxy S7 is expected to bring in a host of new features. As the South Korean manufacturer pins all its hopes on the Galaxy S8 after last year quite literally went up in flames, thanks to the Galaxy Note 7; the company is aiming to offer as many frills as possible to regain consumers’ faith. By far, there have been enough leaks around the most closely watched product launch in years , and we pretty much have a fair idea about how it would look and work when it is officially released. Now, based on the latest information detailed by serial leakster Evan Blass, the Samsung Galaxy S8 will come with a display size of 5.8-inch offering Quad HD resolution and the plus-sized model, dubbed Galaxy S8+, will feature a 6.2-inch Quad HD display. In his tweet, Blass notes that displays on both of the variants will be Super AMOLED. When Samsung launched its first smartphone with a spilling display in 2014, the Samsung Note Edge, it has continued with the Edge branding until the last Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. However, with the upcoming launch of the Galaxy S8, it is expected that the company could either do away with the ‘edge’ branding or introduce a new variant in the series that will have a flat display. Last week, we came across another leak, yet again from Evan Blass, who showed off the product logo for what could be the larger variant of the Galaxy S8. Dubbed Galaxy S8+ with a symbol, one could assume it to be meant for the plus-sized variant of the smartphone. While we do know that there will definitely be a larger variant of the Samsung Galaxy S8, it is still unclear if it will carry a spilling display. To help get an idea, here s a breakup of all the specifications and features of the purported Galaxy S8:
Display: Based on the reports, Samsung will release a Galaxy S8 with 5.8-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, alongside a Galaxy S8+ which will have a larger 6.2-inch QHD Super AMOLED display. If one compares it with last year s releases, the display sizes are anyway larger. The Galaxy S7 features a 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display while the Galaxy S7 Edge has a 5.5-inch QHD Super AMOLED display. The idea behind adopting a larger display size is attributed to the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, following which, a large number of phablet-screen lovers were disappointed.
There have been reports which suggested that Samsung could bring in elements from the ill-fated Note 7 to its future line of smartphones if it wants to win fans back. Hence, the move towards a larger display size falls in tune with these speculations. In one of the latest leaks, a support page for the larger Galaxy S8+ has gone line in India much earlier than anticipated, confirming its model number and a few other details. The model number SM-G955FD hints at a dual-SIM variant of the Galaxy S8+. It now clears the air about whether the plus sized variant will have a curved display or not. As a report on SamMobile puts it, the purported model will feature a 6.2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with QHD resolution and also feature a microSD card slot.
Processor, RAM and storage: Samsung is long rumored to be apparently saving all of Qualcomm s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset for its first major release of the year. However, there have been reports hinting at the use of Samsung s in-house Exynos 8895 processor. It is expected that with the Snapdragon chipset, the Galaxy S8 will come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for its lower variant while the Galaxy S8+ will house up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
Camera: Although the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset offers support for dual-camera, there haven t been reports about the Galaxy S8 going the iPhone 7 Plus way and opting for such a module. It is speculated that the Galaxy S8 will feature a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, along with an 8-megapixel selfie camera. Battery, connectivity and others: It is expected that the Galaxy S8 could be fuelled by a 3,250mAh battery while the plus sized variant will house a 3,750mAh battery. With a USB Type-C port, we can further expect Samsung to carry forward the wireless charging capabilities with the newer Galaxy flagships. The Galaxy S8 is rumored to come with an iris scanner which will be in addition to the fingerprint scanner on the phone. In what could be a major design change, or rather a herding effect, Samsung could be placing the scanner at the rear panel instead of embedding it into the front home button. It is also expected to come with Samsung’s first digital assistant, Bixby.
Availability: Based on a WSJ report, it is expected that Samsung will release its new Galaxy S8 smartphone sometime in March. This falls in line with rumors about the company not detailing the anticipated smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017. Now, the rumor mill points to March 29 as the launch date and as WSJ puts it, It will be Samsung s most closely watched product launch in years.
