Up till now there have been rumours that even with the next year s Galaxy S8, Samsung will follow the Galaxy S7-like trend, launching two versions of the smartphone, one with a flat display and one with curved edges. However, the latest reports suggest that, there in fact will be no flat display version of the Galaxy S8. According to a report in the Korea Herald, there will be only dual curved-edge screen variants of the Samsung Galaxy S8. Although, this report does fall in line with the previous reports that the S8 will come in two variants, but it further reveals that the difference in the variants will be the screen size. One version will carry a 5.7-inch screen, while the other will feature a 6.2-inch display. The Korea Herald report also fall in line with the previous report of the Galaxy S8 featuring a bezel-less display with a screen-to-body ratio above 90 percent. All this while, the Galaxy S8 s display has been compared with the 91.3 percent display ratio on the Xiaomi Mi MIX. However, the decision of Samsung to drop the flat screen version has some analysts worried. Choo Dae-young, an analyst at Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, told the publication, There appears to be no high demand for dual-edge screens because some still find them inconvenient because they mistakenly touch the sides of the smartphones. The utility of a bezel-less display does not seem that much higher for small, portable smartphones compared to televisions. ALSO READ: Samsung Galaxy S8 may feature an all-screen design
Another analyst, Peter Lee of NH Investment & Securities said, Samsung appears to be pushing dual-edge screens to distinguish its design rather than from an efficiency perspective. In order to boost efficiency, Samsung needs to unveil foldable devices, which can be used as both smartphones and tablets.
Recent reports also suggest that the smartphone could feature an all-screen front. This means, that the front panel of the smartphone would be just the display of the smartphone, with no bezels around the screen, and for that purpose the home button will potentially be dropped as well, reported Bloomberg Technology citing sources who have direct knowledge of the matter. Additionally, the home button will reportedly be embedded beneath the glass on the lower section of the screen. The new phones will only come with wraparound displays using organic light-emitting diode technology, the publication reported.
Another little specification of the design detail had come from a report by Sammobile, which suggested that the Galaxy S8 could feature a Quad HD resolution, however it will use an RGB Super AMOLED panel instead of a Diamond PenTile-based one. This means that the display would be a lot more sharper, with a higher picture quality. It is also being said that the new panel will be sturdier, making it a lot harder to damage.
