The video first posted on China’s microblogging platform shows touch sensitivity test being carried out on an unreleased Samsung Galaxy S9. The 10 seconds long clip doesn’t offer much information about the device being tested but the navigation icons at the bottom confirms that it is a Samsung device. Samsung has already confirmed that Galaxy S9, being an iterative update to Galaxy S8, won’t bring radical changes in terms of design. The video shows that front panel of Galaxy S9 will be similar to Galaxy S8, but the bottom bezel seems to be trimmed a bit further. However, there is no way to confirm that the video posted on Weibo is legitimate. In terms of features, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to sport the same 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display like its predecessor and will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile platform in the US while all other markets will get models powered by company’s own Exynos 9 Series 9810 SoC. The smartphone is expected to be bring huge gains in performance and graphics processing over the outgoing model.
Apart from thinner bezels, one notable change with the Galaxy S9 series this year will be the placement of fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy S9 duo will have fingerprint sensor below the camera module making it easier to reach than that found on Galaxy S8 series. Speaking of camera, Samsung is already teasing camera improvements for the Galaxy S9 with the invite reading “Camera, reimagined.”
Most rumors point at Galaxy S9 featuring single rear camera setup and Galaxy S9+ offering dual rear cameras. The primary camera is said to support variable aperture ranging from wide f/1.5 to narrower f/2.4. The leaks suggest that the Galaxy S9 will use the wider f/1.5 aperture in low-light scenario while the aperture will be locked to f/2.4 in well lit conditions. It is not clear how the camera tech will be implemented and whether the user gets to control the aperture but if done right, this could well be a game changer as far as smartphone cameras are concerned. Among other camera features leaked include ability to shoot 1080p slow-motion videos at 480fps and 720p slow-motion videos at 960fps.
The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will of course come with metal and glass design seen on its predecessor and support wireless charging. The smartphones are also expected to be IP68 water and dust resistant. There are also reports indicating that both the S9 models will have 3.5mm headphone jack and run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.
Canalys recently claimed that iPhone X sales are off to a great start despite supply with shipments hitting 29 million units during the holiday season. However, the demand for the redesigned iPhone seems to be tapering off and it needs to be seen whether Galaxy S9 sales will hurt the sales further.
