Samsung sells its newest flagship Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in variants that can be differentiated in terms of storage and the processor powering them. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 mobile platform in the US and China, while rest of the markets get variants powered by company’s own Exynos chipset. Since the main motherboard varies across markets, the smartphones also tend to offer varied performance and battery life. Now a new finding reveals that the difference between a Qualcomm-powered Galaxy S9 and Exynos-equipped Galaxy S9 could be vast, both in terms of performance and battery life. The reports highlight that Exynos chipset is better optimized for the Galaxy smartphones since Samsung designs both the phone as well as the chipset, but Qualcomm-based models seems to perform well in the longer run. Strategy Analytics has found that the Galaxy S9 variant with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC lasts longer than the one using its own Exynos 9810 mobile chipset. Yonhap News reports that Samsung Galaxy S9 lasted 26 hours and 52 minutes in the battery test run by Strategy Analytics to take sixth place among all smartphones. The latest flagship device fell far behind last year’s LG G6, which lasted for 32 hours and 35 minutes and Huawei’s P10, which has a comparable figure of 32 hours and 8 minutes. Sony Xperia XZ2 was the leader with 36 hours and 1 minute followed by Sony XZ2 Compact, whose battery ran out in 34 hours and 20 minutes.
“Battery performance for all devices was measured by determining the length of time taken to fully empty the battery under a ‘typical user scenario,” Strategy Analytics said. Leading tech publication AnandTech found similar results where the Snapdragon version of the Galaxy S9 lasted for 10.48 hours in its test while the Exynos variant ran out of juice in 6.80 hours while browsing the web on Wi-Fi.

While a small difference in performance and battery life is plausible between processors, the difference cited by Strategy Analytics and AnandTech show that something is up with Samsung’s Exynos processors. Similar disparity has been seen in performance as well with speed test videos proving Exynos-based Galaxy S9 to be slower than the one using Snapdragon 845. There is a possibility that the Galaxy S9’s are not yet tweaked well to fully exploit the performance of Exynos SoC without draining the battery life, but it is precisely what you won’t expect from a flagship smartphone.
