Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ are barely a few months old yet rumors surrounding next year’s Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are already doing rounds. The expected smartphones are said to have entered pre-production stage, and are codenamed ‘Star’ and ‘Star 2’ respectively.
The news was first reported by the Korean media channel The Bell, which also hinted at a couple of specifications for the smartphones. Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will most likely follow the trend and come with slightly larger displays. Whether Samsung increases the actual display size by stretching the dimensions of the phone or the bezels get still slimmer is yet unknown. Unlike previous suggestions, Samsung Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ will not be foldable phones but rather, feature the same curved-edge Infinity Display that was introduced in the Galaxy S8 series.
Apart from the display, the smartphone will also improve on the camera, as per leaks. The one thing missing from Galaxy S8 series this year was the dual rear camera setup. Now that upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 8 renders have leaked showcasing a dual-camera setup, it is highly likely that the tradition will continue with the 2018 flagship devices too. Samsung is expected to innovate and provide some distinct photography features for its new dual camera. The dual trend might come to the selfie camera too, though presently it looks highly unlikely. As usual, Samsung will partner with Qualcomm for the latest chipset to power the Galaxy S9 series devices. Samsung will continue with two chipset variants — one Snapdragon 7nm processor and the other, in-house Exynos chipset. This year, we saw the Exynos chipset take over and outdo the Snapdragon 835-powered Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
Coming to the code names for the smartphones, Samsung code-names devices with a certain goal in mind. Samsung Galaxy S8 series was codenamed ‘Project Dream’ as Samsung hoped to take on Apple and outperform the Cupertino giant in terms of sales. Kim Hye-deok, Executive Director of Product Strategy, Samsung Electronics’s Wireless Division had said, “Dream to overcome Apple.” The significance of the present codenames is unknown. As per reports, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will enter production stage as early as later this year. The timeline is earlier than previous years suggesting Samsung might launch the smartphones relatively earlier. However, post the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, Samsung has increased the testing period and that is what led to the delay in the launch of Galaxy S8 series phones this year. Early production timelines could mean vigorous testing with on-time arrival at Mobile World Congress 2018. However, it is still early days, and the reports are best taken with a grain of salt.
