The day started with Samsung sending out media invites for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ launch event at MWC 2018 next month. This was followed by Google revealing I/O 2018 dates starting from May 8. Further, Japan Display Inc (JDI) announced the development of a glass-based transparent capacitive fingerprint sensor. Without further ado, here’s a look at the top news stories of the day.
Samsung Galaxy S9-duo media invite
Samsung is all set to unveil the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ on February 25 at the ‘unpacked’ even at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to sport 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch OLED displays, respectively. Both smartphones will also be among the first devices to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. However, in a market like India, Samsung will use the company’s Exynos 9810 chipset. The Galaxy S9 is rumored to pack a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). It will further support slow-motion recording. Up front, there could be an 8-megapixel auto-focus camera.
Google I/O 2018 dates
The dates are set. Google’s annual I/O Developer Conference is set to take place from May 8 to May 10, 2018, and will be held in Mountain View, California, at the Shoreline Amphitheater. Clues included a pineapple cake in one room, which might also be a hint at the name of upcoming Android P OS. Last year’s Google I/O focused on Android Oreo, Google Assistant, Google Photos, and Daydream standalone headsets.
Vivo X20 Plus UD launched in China
World’s first in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone has been launched. The Vivo X20 Plus UD is the first smartphone to feature the under-display fingerprint sensor. It uses the latest Synaptics Clear ID FS9500 sensor. The smartphone features a 6.43-inch FullView AMOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 660 octa-core chipset. The smartphone sports a 24-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual-camera at the back with DSLR-like bokeh effect feature, OIS and LED flash. At the front, we get a 24-megapixel selfie camera.
Apple iOS 11.3
After pushing the iOS 11.2.5 update, which brought HomePod support, Siri news, and a fix for the Messages text bomb, Apple has now released iOS 11.3. This spring, iOS 11.3 will deliver exciting new ways to experience augmented reality on iPhone and iPad, new Animojis on the iPhone X and the ability to view health records in the Health app. Apple says users will now be able to see their battery life. Users will also be told if your battery is triggering a chip slowdown, and can choose to turn that feature off.
JDI announces new technology for fingerprint sensor
Japan Display Inc (JDI) has announced the development of a glass-based transparent capacitive fingerprint sensor. The company plans to start commercial shipments of the technology within its 2018 fiscal year. Japan Display said in its announcement that it has developed “a transparent glass-based capacitive fingerprint sensor by applying the company’s capacitive multi-touch technology used in its other liquid crystal displays (LCDs)”. The new technology is likely to be an alternative to under display fingerprint sensors.
