In terms of features, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to be iterative updates, so there won’t be any major changes in the design department. We have already seen press renders of the device detailing what the final device will look, and there have been comparisons showing how Galaxy S9 duo will have slightly higher screen-to-body ratio than its predecessor. With just over a week to go for official announcement, someone managed to get their hands on a Galaxy S9, and has shared final specifications of the device. With the new details, it is pretty clear what Samsung has in store for its Galaxy Unpacked event at MWC 2018 in Barcelona next week. An anonymous Redditor claimed that he got 20 minutes hands-on time with a ‘close to production’ unit of Galaxy S9. The person posted an Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit, where he took questions and answer over more than 12 hours. Here are the details he spilled out in the process.
He reaffirms that Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are identical to their predecessors, and and it will be visually impossible to distinguish between them. “I was really so [surprised] at the fact that it looked like I was holding an s8. It’s really that similar,” the Redditor wrote. The most notable change is at the back with the fingerprint sensor now placed below the camera module, which is precisely where it should have been at the launch of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.
He also confirms that Galaxy S9 has a stereo speaker, one in the earpiece and a second one at the bottom of the phone. It should be called an achievement in its own self considering their thin design. Samsung is teasing that camera on Galaxy S9 will be a major improvement, and the Redditor confirms the camera offers improved image quality as well as 4K video recording but notes that slow-motion videos at 1,000fps is not supported.
Further, he mentions that the 3D emoji feature on Galaxy S9 is not an exact copy of Animoji on iPhone X and offers different user experience. “They’re not a direct ripoff of animoji, more like a mix between animoji and bitmoji,” he wrote in reply on Reddit.
To recall, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to feature 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Super AMOLED display. They will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC in the US and China while rest of the world will get variants powered by Exynos 9810 chipset. The Galaxy S9 will start with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage while Galaxy S9+ will offer 6GB RAM and 128GB storage in base model.
The Galaxy S9 will have one 12-megapixel rear camera with variable aperture, while the Galaxy S9+ will have dual 12-megapixel cameras at the back. Both the models will stick with an 8-megapixel front camera and support improved iris recognition. The smartphones are said to go on sale starting March 16.
