Samsung has released a new commercial for a smart connected surfboard, conveniently called the Galaxy Surfboard. Endorsed by Brazil star surfer Gabriel Medina, the Galaxy Surfboard allows surfers to stay updated with important notifications on their smartphone. The commercial shows Gabriel getting coaching tips from his coach right on the head of his surfboard. Even before you ask why the heck you would need notifications when you are surfing, Samsung has already addressed these in its ad. According to Samsung’s highly melodramatic commercial, surfing can be very lonely and that the surfers can be motivated by tweets from their fans. Also, they can get tips from their coaches when alone in the sea. Besides messages from friends, the Samsung Galaxy Surfboard keeps you updated with real time swells and weather conditions. The surfboard has a LED display on one end and is powered by a Samsung Galaxy S7, which is docked into a drawer on the side of the board. It is worth pointing out that the Galaxy S7 comes with IP68 certification, which makes it water-resistant.
While the concept behind the smart surfboard may be noble and even looks quite futuristic, it does the raise the question — is it really necessary for surfers? Will it not be more distracting for them? Aren’t we already distracted enough by our smartphones and never-ending notifications? Sadly, the product seems more of a gimmick than a serious product, for now. We don’t think that it’s actually going to be commercially rolled out anytime sooner.
