Samsung, along with a slew of other products, has announced the Gear VR Innovator Edition at its Developer Conference. The virtual reality headset will launch in the US in December in two variants. From the looks of it, the Gear VR is closer to the DIY Google Cardboard virtual reality headset than Occulus Rift, which was the original inspiration. However, the Gear VR is more comfortable to wear with an elastic band and padding on the sides. The headset is currently only compatible with the Galaxy Note 4 and comes with the well-known Oculus technology. It offers users an immersive experience complete with gyro-and accelerometer-based motion controls, proximity sensors, and touchpad controls. It also has a see through button that activates the phone’s rear camera to give users a feed of the real world so they won’t have to take off the headset to see what’s happening. With this device, Samsung not only looks to tap into the virtual reality gaming with the help of a smartphone, but also enhance the experience of watching videos and live events from the Internet.
As far as the software goes, the Gear VR comes with Oculus Home – a VR home screen and content discovery centre, which includes a Samsung section. It has the Oculus Store application that lets you browse and download new content from the Oculus platform. The Gear VR has the Oculus Cinema, which is a virtual reality movie theater and cinema where you can watch your favorite movies in an immersive virtual environment.
And lastly, the device has Oculus 360 Videos and Photos that lets you view videos and panoramas in 360 degrees, giving you a very immersive experience.
