Samsung, Apple, Huawei and Qualcomm are the leading companies designing their own processors based on architecture from UK’s ARM Holdings. The South Korean company Samsung launched its flagship mobile chipset Exynos 9 Series 9810 with AI capabilities in January but the company might have already commenced work on its iterative update. The Exynos 9 Series 9810 SoC powered the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship smartphone in markets other than China and the US. Now, a gadget tipster going by the name Ice Universe has posted screenshot of what seems to be the development process for Exynos 9820. The tipster does not reveal any critical information about the upcoming SoC including its launch timeline but Samsung might have commenced development and could debut alongside the Galaxy Note 9 launch in the second half of 2018. The mention of the name Exynos 9820 suggests that it will be an iterative update and might not bring any major improvements, especially in terms of performance but it could be based on Samsung’s new 7nm fabrication process. The Exynos 9810 was based on second-generation 10nm process and switch to 7nm process could bring along better efficiency and reports from Korea indicate Samsung has already mass production of chipsets based on 7nm EUV fabrication process.

Qualcomm announced Snapdragon X24, the world’s first LTE modem capable of throughput up to 2Gbps at MWC 2018 in February. The chipset is the industry’s first to be based on new 7nm fabrication process and Samsung is believed to be retained as partner by the San Diego-based company for fabrication of future chipsets from the brands. Both Samsung and Qualcomm’s next generation mobile platforms based on 7nm process are expected to bring support for 5G mobile communication.

The leak comes on the heels of a new report from Strategy Analytics, which claimed that Galaxy S9 powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 last longer than the model powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9810 SoC. The report was further supported by a similar conclusion from AnandTech which said Snapdragon equipped Galaxy S9 lasts much longer than the Exynos variant. The reports concluded that something is up with Samsung’s Exynos SoC since such a big disparity is not seen between flagship Exynos and Snapdragon mobile platforms.
