Samsung today unveiled that it has begun to produce the 14nm FinFET fabrication process. The said mobile application processor is reportedly going to be used in its forthcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone. “Samsung’s advanced 14nm FinFET process technology is undoubtedly the most advanced logic process technology in the industry,” said Gabsoo Han, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, System LSI Business, Samsung Electronics. “We expect the production of our 14nm mobile application processor to positively impact the growth of the mobile industry by enabling further performance improvements for cutting-edge smartphones.” Also Read - Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge get January 2019 Android Security Patch
The new mobile application processor comes with a range of improvements. The company notes that it has successfully incorporated 3D FinFET structure on transistors, which has enabled it to overcome the limitations by the previous 20nm processes. The company also mentioned that the 14nm FinFET process will be adopted by its Exynos 7 Octa. The processor which also brings “30 percent productivity gain” will be able to challenge Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processors. The Snapdragon 810 chipset from Qualcomm is based on the 20nm fabrication process from TSMC.
Last week, leaked benchmark information of alleged S6 Edge handset which is supposedly powered by Exynos processor managed 60,978 score. It was by far the best score a Samsung handset has managed. Its AnTuTu score was also higher than several Snapdragon 805-specced smartphones. Even the Snapdragon 810’s AnTuTu score is 54251.
With Samsung’s increasing advancement in the mobile processing, and the bold decision to use it over Qualcomm’s latest offering, Exynos could soon witness a spike in its popularity and presence.
