In a blog post, Samsung’s camera R&D chief DongHoon Jang writes how they are focusing on boosting the megapixel count, as well as make it really simple for users to click great photos. The camera on the Galaxy S6 “will be intelligent and do all the thinking for users, allowing them to take amazing pictures under any conditions, without having to worry about anything more than just pressing the shutter button.” This simplicity is something Samsung’s rivals like Apple and LG offer on its flagship devices well. The camera UI is simple, and clicking good photos is as easy as hitting a button. Also Read - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3 launch on August 27? New report suggests
Additionally, Jang also talks about the ongoing selfie craze and how it is important for the company to cater to it. He writes, “While earlier front-facing cameras were regarded as an “extra”, superfluous to the “main” camera on the rear, this is clearly no longer the case anymore.” While the Galaxy S5 featured a 2-megapixel front camera, recent smartphones like the Galaxy A-series of smartphones all have a 5-megapixel selfie camera. This is trend that will continue with the forthcoming flagship device as well. Also Read - Samsung now lets you make an appointment to shop at its stores, book demo via WhatsApp
While it is good to see Samsung focusing on its smartphone’s imaging prowess, it still seems stuck on the megapixel race. As seen in the above table, Jang has highlighted how the company has progressively increased the megapixel count of its cameras since the days of the Galaxy S.
From what we have heard so far, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S6 and a curved display variant called the Galaxy S Edge at MWC next month. It is likely to feature a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED QHD display, octa-core Exynos processor, 3GB of RAM, 20-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera, and 32GB internal storage.
