Samsung to launch an Android Go smartphone in India soon

Android Go is Google's specially made light platform for affordable devices, and Samsung will likely tap the system for its upcoming device.

Recently, Xiaomi overtook Samsung to gain a dominant market share in the Indian market. This has largely been attributed to Samsung’s growing inability to make convincing affordable smartphones, particularly in the face of the onslaught of quality affordable devices from various Chinese smartphone makers, including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Huawei-owned Honor. However, according to a new report, Samsung could be working on its first Android Go device for India. The smartphone will naturally be an affordable device with low-end specifications, meant to serve as an entry level smartphone for first-time users and those upgrading from a feature phone. The report by Sam Mobile also suggests that Samsung could call the device the Galaxy J2 Core, and the phone could run on Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition), with 1GB of RAM. Samsung’s offerings in the affordable space have thus far been focused on its Tizen operating system, but a switch to Android Go would allow the company to use Android’s superior app ecosystem for its devices. This would also solve any perception issues, and customers would be more willing to spend on Android device than any other operating system, particularly in the affordable segment. The report suggests that the phone that’s being tested for the Indian subcontinent had various clues in a Geekbench benchmark listing that revealed its likely identity, including the ‘go’ and the end of its motherboard name. The affordable device could debut in India soon, and it would make sense with the company’s strategy to have better devices available for its budget consumers in India. While no other details, including pricing, are known for now, the phone is likely to be priced in the ultra affordable segment to take on the entry-level Xiaomi devices, and could be priced around Rs 5,000 or less.
