The Galaxy S8 might be the next smartphone one should be excited about in 2017 but Samsung is already on its way to deliver something beyond the spilling displays. The company is long rumored to be working on a foldable smartphone and after over a year of working on ‘Project Valley’, Samsung has now filed a trademark for the Galaxy X moniker, suggesting the concept is soon set to become a reality. The listing for the Galaxy X moniker falls in line with earlier leaks when a Weibo post revealed model numbers for two devices SM-X9000 (Galaxy X1) and SM-X9050 (Galaxy X1 Plus)- from the purported lineup. Given that the rumored smartphone will be the first in the category, Samsung is reportedly planning a limited initial release of one or two foldable phones in Q3 or Q4 this year, GSMArena notes. If previous reports are to be believed, the purported technology would allow the smartphone to have a bendable section in the middle which allows the device to be folded outwards. With this concept, once opened, the smartphone in question will have displays both on the front and back panels.ALSO READ: Samsung Galaxy X1, Galaxy X1 Plus foldable smartphones leaked; here s everything you need to know
To put into perspective, the smartphone will have a full display on the front that will stretch to the rear panel as well. It can thus be converted into a 7-inch tablet when unfolded. Whether understood as a tablet than can be turned into a compact smartphone or vice-versa, the said technology takes the idea of 2-in-1 laptops and brings it to the tablet and smartphone portfolio.
It is worth mentioning that Samsung is not the only manufacturer experimenting with foldable or flexible displays. LG has been long working in this direction and has already commercialised the technology through rollable and flexible display panels for televisions. Lenovo, on the other hand, has showcased smartphone and tablet prototypes at the Tech World 2016 event. The foldable smartphone can be worn like a wrist band while the tablet can be folded down the middle and used like a large screened smartphone. However, these are mere prototypes and are yet to see the light of the day. ALSO READ: Samsung s flexible smartphone to fold outward, expected to launch in Q3 2017: Report
Although Samsung has filed patent for the technology and also registered the moniker, one needs to take it with the grain of salt, till the company officially announces its venture into the category or we come across plausible leaks with the purported phone-in-action.
