Samsung might be working on a new set of earbuds, if a new trademark filing is anything to go by. The South Korean giant has filed trademark for the name “Samsung Buds” in Europe that hints at launch of new earphones.

The trademark, first spotted by Sammobile, indicates that Samsung might soon introduce a pair of new earphones in the market. While the trademark application does not give any more detail about the upcoming product, it does hint at launch of new wireless earbuds, which could be called the Samsung Buds. These Samsung Buds could replace Gear IconX, Samsung’s wireless earbuds currently available in the market.

Samsung has been lately phasing out Gear branding in order to make its products resonate better in terms of naming. In New York last month, Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch, which is company’s new smartwatch and is technically the successor to Gear Sport without the Gear branding. With Samsung Buds, there is a possibility that we are looking at second generation Gear IconX without the Gear branding.

There are speculations that Samsung is working on a truly wireless earbuds and Bixby-powered earphones. It is also said to be working on a device that will essentially be a combination of the two. Samsung launching such a product should not come as a surprise since it is a space that is becoming really popular.

Apple is the leader in the wireless earbuds segment with AirPods, which has become a surprise hit product for the company, especially for consumers with iPhones that do not have the headphone jack. Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has also launched its own version of wireless earbuds called the Freebuds.

Huawei’s Freebuds seem to be a cross between Apple AirPods and Samsung Gear IconX. It features a wireless design and offers features like tap control, clear conversation, and has a 10 hours playtime. Google is also said to be working on its own version of wireless earbuds called Pixel Buds alongside Pixel 3 smartphones next month.
