Samsung today unveiled its new mid-range Exynos 7 Series 9610 SoC with deep-learning based image processing support. Built for the upper mid-range smartphones, such as Galaxy A-series, the chipset sits below the company s flagship Exynos 9810 SoC that powers the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Built on Samsung s 10nm FinFET process, the chipset is designed to offer the right mix between power and energy efficiency. The Exynos 7 Series 9610 is our latest mobile processor that delivers on added power and speed. But more importantly, it sets a new performance standard for high-end devices with its deep learning vision-image processing solution and slow-motion video capabilities that change the way we engage with our mobile devices, said Ben Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. The Exynos 9610 octa-core CPU comes with four Cortex-A73 cores running at 2.3GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.6GHz. The GPU is a Bifrost-based ARM Mali-G72, which Samsung claims to offer realistic and immersive graphics.
Samsung is touting enhanced face detection feature on the chipset, thanks to the neural network engine along with image and vision processing. The advance detection will enable the camera to recognize faces even when they are partially hidden by hat or hair, or even if the face is not directly facing the camera. Also, the smart depth sensing feature will allow to click portrait selfies with DSLR-like bokeh effects.
Besides AI-based image processing, the chipset will also allow users to record 480fps slow-motion videos in full HD (1080p) resolution, and 4K videos at 120fps. On the connectivity front, the chipset supports GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, FM radio and LTE modem with Cat.12 2CA carrier aggregation with a download speed of up to 600Mbps and Cat.13 2CA with an upload speed of 150Mbps.
The Exynos 7 Series 9610 SoC will go on mass production in the second half of the year. This also means that Samsung smartphones powering the new chipset will hit the market later this year.
