The world might have moved on to candy-bar smartphones, but Samsung has remained loyal to the flip phone format. Some of Samsung‘s flip phones are the most premium, and the most advanced in the market when it comes to pricing. This year, Samsung is expected to announce the W2018, which will replace last year’s W2017. So far, the W-series flip handsets have been restricted only to certain Asian markets, and while previously there were rumors of Samsung announcing the W2017 in international markets, it is yet to debut anywhere. With the Samsung W2018, Samsung is equipping the device with flagship specifications if recent leaks by a Twitter user in China are anything to go by. Spotted by Sammobile, the W2018 will come with the latest Snapdragon 835 chipset. The chipset will be coupled with 6GB RAM. The flip phone will come in just one internal storage option and that is 64GB. Except for the internal storage, all the specifications mentioned in the leak are contrary to what the previous TENAA listing revealed. Samsung W2018 was spotted on TENAA back in May, and the smartphone came with the model number SM-G9298. The listing showed that the W2018 came with only marginal improvements over the W2017 — retaining the display and also the storage variants. Instead of the more advanced Snapdragon 835, the listing showed the smartphone with Snapdragon 821AB SoC coupled with 4GB RAM instead of 6GB as the recent leak mentions. The difference between the listing and the latest leak could hint at Samsung expanding the flip series and introducing two versions of the W-series smartphone. In terms of the display, the W2018 is expected to come with dual displays — 4.2-inch full HD (1080p) displays. One of the displays will be right on top, on the flip cover whereas the other will be inside and can be accessed only by opening the smartphone. The smartphone is expected to retain the physical alpha-numeric keypad. Despite the dual displays, the battery is expected to be around 2,300mAh. The main camera will be 12-megapixel with a 5-megapixel selfie camera on the front. ALSO READ: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 to come in 5 color variants, including ‘Deep Blue’ option: Report
Looking at the difference between the two, once the device is actually announced, there could be differences in other specifications too. The phone is expected to be priced around $2,000 (approximately Rs 128,200) which is in line with the previous pricing structure. The flip-phone will most likely run on Android Nougat, and be unveiled around the end of the year. There has still not been any hype from Samsung on any of the Chinese or the Korean social media platforms suggesting that the smartphone is still some way off. This has been one of the first rumors about the Samsung W2018 and more details with image leaks are expected to filter in the coming days.
