According to one industry leaker who goes by the Twitter handle @MMDDJ_, Samsung’s folding phone won’t be called the Galaxy X. The information after confirmation that Samsung is also working on a gaming smartphone. While the industry insider claims that Samsung will not call it Galaxy X, there is no clarity on what the final device will be called. There is a possibility that Samsung is working with a placeholder name and will finalize the branding ahead of the official launch. Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh has confirmed that the company is working on a foldable smartphone. However, he did not reveal when the company plans to launch the device in the market. He told media that the launch of Samsung’s foldable smartphone is subject to technical challenges and availability of right components to achieve the bendable design.
One of the prime reason behind Samsung not adopting the Galaxy X branding could be because of Apple iPhone X. The iPhone X will become a year old device in September and is expected to get successors at this year’s fall event. Samsung might be trying to avoid a clash with iPhone X in terms of branding with the foldable smartphone.
Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy Note 9 at an event in New York next month. The company might shed more light on the foldable smartphone project at the event. The leaks so far hint at Samsung launching the foldable smartphone at CES 2019 in January. However, nothing seems certain related to the foldable device.
ZTE is the only major smartphone maker to have launched a foldable smartphone. Samsung is, however, said to be taking a different approach with a bendable display and a form factor that will fold vertically and not horizontally. The foldable smartphone is seen as the next major breakthrough in the approach to have all-screen display design and it needs to be seen whether Samsung makes the innovative offering among all brands next year.
