Patent and patent applications are quite futuristic and usually don t make it to the commercial market. But that said, they do give a fair idea about the possibilities a company is exploring. Samsung s latest patent, however, is definitely worth talking about. The company has patented a rotary display for a smartwatch that would act as a secondary display to show weather updates and time and date among others. It will be an illuminated display allowing users to have the information at a quick glance. However, Samsung s proposed rotary display does not rotate 360 degrees, instead can do so up to 90 degrees. The display is made up of two components, but Samsung doesn t really explain their purpose. Also Read - Samsung Galaxy S22 series India variants might be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC
Samsung s patent reads, A smartwatch comprising: a body portion having an upper surface and a side surface adjacent to the upper surface; a front display panel disposed over the upper surface of the body portion and comprising a round edge when viewed from a front direction; a side display panel disposed over the side surface of the body portion and curved to surround the edge when viewed from the front direction; a driver circuit board disposed over the side surface of the body portion, wherein the driver circuit board comprises a first pad area adjacent to the front display panel and a second pad area facing an end of the side display panel; a first conductive film configured to connect the first pad area and the front display panel; and a second conductive film configured to connect the second pad area and an end of the side display panel.”
Samsung s secondary display reminds us of the Galaxy edge series wherein side bezel of the display can be used for providing additional information. Unlike a lot of circular smartwatches, Samsung s smartwatches make most of the circular display. The company introduced the circular display with the Gear S2 which had a rotating bezel, allowing users to perform a slew of tasks. The latest patent shows how Samsung can further evolve the concept of its rotating bezel, which perhaps no one else has been able to pull off.
That being said, another exciting device from Samsung worth talking about is the foldable Galaxy X series. According to last round of updates, the Samsung Galaxy X foldable phone will debut later this year, speculated to arrive at the same time as the Apple iPhone 8. According to reports, the smartphone will come with a secondary display that will turn on whenever the device is folded.
The device bends from the middle allowing users to use the smartphone as a flip phone. The device will also house a physical home button up front with power and volume buttons on the right side. ALSO READ: Samsung s foldable phone prototype to launch alongside Apple iPhone 8: Report
