Satya Nadella sheds light on Microsoft's plans with smartphones and the future: Reports

Satya Nadella revives hopes of the Microsoft Surface Phone again.

The long rumored Microsoft Surface Phone which is turning into a mythical creature, has found its way back in the news again. Microsoft has been rumored to launch its Surface Phone since 2012 and every event has turned into a disappointment. With no new developments heard, expectations on the Surface Phone died down. Microsoft s CEO Satya Nadella has now been quoted saying that the company will make more phones and they would not look like the devices present in the industry right now. In a podcast with MarketPlace s Molly Wood and Kai Ryssdal, Satya Nadella shares his thoughts about the future of mobile business in Microsoft. Nadella is quoted as saying, We make phones today, we have OEMs like HP making phones and others, and we picked a very specific are to focus on which is management, security, and this one particular feature that we have called Continuum, which is a phone that can even be a desktop.

Microsoft introduced Continuum feature on Windows 10 operating system for mobile. This feature works with a standalone Display Dock that connects a compatible smartphone to an external smartphone bringing PC-like experience on big screen monitors. Continuum feature debuted in 2015 and Microsoft could be bringing something bigger to the plate. Previous reports suggested that the Surface Phone will run an Intel-based chipset and x86 applications in Continuum. ALSO READ: Windows 10 has 300 million daily active users globally: Microsoft

Nadella seems to be deeply focusing brining something new to the smartphone industry as he says, So when you say when will we make more phones I m sure we ll make more phones. But they may not look like phones that are there today. These sudden appearances about the Microsoft Surface Phone only highlight the fact that this device will be a level above all existing smartphones. Microsoft has not been successful with its smartphone business, even after the acquisition of Nokia. Nadella s comments only adds to the building momentum of what s expected from the Surface Phone.

Going back to a statement Nadella had made last year regarding the Surface Phone, he says, We don t want to be driven by just envy of what others have, the question is, what can we bring? That s where I look at any device form factor or any technology, even AI. We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today s market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device.

A report by Taiwan s Commercial Times said that Pegatron, one of Microsoft s suppliers is working on the Surface Phone. The launch is said to happen somewhere around 2017 or early 2018. Microsoft is yet to unveil the most awaited device in its Surface lineup, the SurfacePhone. Microsoft is scheduled to hold an event on May 23 in Shanghai but what s expected is the Surface Pro 5.
