One of the first things you will notice on this update is the design overhaul. It has a much flatter look, colorful buttons and will also support Windows Phone-like swipe gestures to move between contacts list, recent chats, favorites and multiple chat windows. Speaking of which, there is also an all new in-app notification banner, which will inform you of any messages without you having to leave the current chat window.
Other new features include chat buttons and dialer buttons at the bottom as well as an improved unread messages notification. This essentially syncs across devices so if you have read the message on iPad, it will be checked on the iPhone too.
While Microsoft hasn t revealed when the update is scheduled to be rolled out, in an interview with 9To5Mac s Mark Gurman, Skype s designer Guilherme Schneider revealed that the updated app will arrive as early as next week.
We had an opportunity to interview Skype s head, Gurdeep Singh Pall, who talks about how the app has grown since its inception and what we can expect in the future at a time when free messaging apps like WhatsApp and WeChats are ruling the roost.
