Earlier this month, Google released Android 4.4 KitKat along with the new Nexus 5, bringing with it a host of new features including an improved dialer app. According to a Google Plus post by the company, this new dialer app does more than just integrate contacts across all your Google account. According to the post, the Smart Caller ID in the app will show numbers even if they are not saved in your contacts list. In case of businesses, Google will refer to its Google Places listing and show the relevant business number instead of an unknown number. The new search bar in the dialer also allows one to search business phone numbers directly from within the app.
Google also mentions that, starting 2014, the dialer app will also display people s verified numbers along with their Google profile photos saved in the database. This feature is thankfully optional, and only the numbers with discovery turned on will be visible.
These new features are quite interesting and the app has clearly come a long way from the ones we have seen in the previous OS. This could also put a serious dent into TrueCaller, which too functions in much the same way, revealing the names of the person who is calling you.
