Snap has had a difficult time with Instagram copying most of its features. The company now feels the need to diversify into a new path. According to a report by The Information, the social media company is working on a gaming hub inside Snapchat. The report confirms that the platform will be launched later this year and apparently the company is already in talks with game publishers to collaborate with on this project.
If we were to take into account the resources the company has invested in its Lens Studio software for developers that is used to create customised AR filters and that it has bought web based 3D game engine called PlayCanvas, then this seems like a logical step. These could be combined to make for a viable game developing platform that would stand out.
Though there has been no report of whether the new games would be AR based, though it only seems logical considering the resources available to the company. The company has already launched a few AR items and one of those games is called Snappables which is a small selfie AR game.
Snapchat is definitely not looking to compete with Google’s ARCore or Apple’s ARKit, but trying to carve out a place of its own. Snapchat may not be looking to create a full-blown gaming platform with messaging-based gaming experiences, but this certainly would be a start.
Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel has reportedly mentioned that he quite liked how Tencent Games set up their business models that sees 40 percent of its revenue come in from in-game purchases on the WeChat app.
