Qualcomm Snapdragon 8180, the next generation of SoC to power Windows 10-powered Always Connected PCs is likely to be significantly powerful according to leaked information. The SoC is expected to be a massive step up from the current generation of processors for Qualcomm when it comes to performance. According to the leaks, the device with internal code name Project Poipu will sport 8.5 billion transistors. For comparison, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 comes with 3 billion transistors and the recently announced Apple A12 Bionic that powers the latest iPhone 2018 lineup comes with 6.9 billion transistors. The information was revealed by tipster Roland Quandt who indicated that the SoC will be based on the 7nm manufacturing process. Quandt also added that the chip will be 20x15mm in size, and power laptops instead of smartphones. However, the Snapdragon 8180-powered laptops are still quite some time away as device makers are currently rolling out Snapdragon 850-powered second generation Always Connected PCs in the market. According to WindowsLatest, the 8180 can draw up to about 15 watts of maximum power, which pits it against the latest U series i5 and i7 chips from Intel.

Snapdragon 8180 is likely to be a significant step in the future of computing as it is likely to bring longer battery backup along with efficient power consumption to Windows 10-powered devices without sacrificing the performance. One thing to note here is that this SoC is also known as the Snapdragon 1000 according to the information.
We have already seen a glimpse of what to expect from these connected devices from the Qualcomm and Microsoft announcement at the Snapdragon Tech Summit late last year. Highlights of such devices include providing up to a week-long battery life while staying always connected, and the ability to instantly turn on. Qualcomm also claimed that these devices will cost less while providing better security to users.
