Even on the official Pixel User Community forum, there is a long thread of discussion about this issue. One of the first complaints about this issue was written by a user Aris Wright back in early November, who said, My phone keeps freezing and I can’t get it to do anything when it does. No response from any buttons for at least a minute and it will just start working randomly. Another user Priyal Sule wrote, My Pixel XL 128GB becomes unresponsive randomly. Doesn’t only happen while using a particular app or while doing a particular task. It’s just random. Either I have to wait few minutes until the screen goes to the lockscreen or force a reboot by holding down the power button. Please help guys!!! While some users found out that this could be caused by a third party app on the devices which does not conform to the Android Nougat OS, and uninstalling some apps actually solved the issue. Some also pointed out at specific apps like Live360 Family Locator, which caused the freezing. However, for some users uninstalling third party apps also did not do the trick.
A user on the thread, Johnymlau, wrote, Hi, I have been having the same issue, it does it every other day or so. It could happen at anytime, not related to a specific app, sometimes it happens whilst the phone in in my pocket and I only find out when people can’t call me. Most of the time, after a few minutes it will start working again, other times I have to hold the power button to reboot. Spoke to Google support, basically suggesting that it’s a 3rd party app issue, so try safe mode or factory reset. Running in safe mode for a couple of days to see if it happens again is impractical. I’ve uninstalled all my non essential apps leaving mainly google apps, but it still does it. I do struggle to see how a 3rd party app can lock the OS solid. I’ve only has the phone a few weeks, so I’m not convinced a factory reset will fix it. I previously had a 6P running 7.11 with the same apps running on it and it never had this problem. So I do think it’s Pixel related. ALSO READ: Google Pixel bug reportedly distorting screenshots sent from an Apple iPhone 7 Plus
Thus, the real cause of the problem has yet to be found. Users are reporting that cleaning the cache, or factory resetting the phone does not help. Unfortunately, this may not be a software issue (which could be solved with an update from Google), but a hardware-related thing.
Ryan Pallett, another Pixel owner participating in the Community discussion said after contacting Google, I have been in touch with Google, and they have looked over this thread. The guy I have spoken to has indicated that some Pixels have a hardware issue, so RMA is the only way to slice this. He has also acknowledged that some have received replacements, but have the same issues and said that although this could happen, the chances are very slim.
