Google released Android 9 Pie, the new version of its mobile operating system for Pixel and Pixel 2 series, earlier this week. Soon after the release of Android 9 for Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Essential released the update for its Essential PH-1, marking the first time an Android OEM has released an update on the same day as Google.

Now, other smartphone makers have started revealing their plans for updates as well. HMD Global, the Finnish company with license to sell Nokia-branded smartphones, released Android P Beta 4 for its mid-range Nokia 7 plus smartphone, this week. The beta is a near-stable build that will be released as part of final roll-out to owners of Nokia 7 plus. Now, Sony has confirmed that six of its Xperia smartphones will soon be updated to Android 9 Pie.

According to GizChina, Sony plans to release Android 9 Pie update for six Xperia smartphones including the Xperia XZ2, the Xperia XZ2 Compact, the Xperia XZ2 Premium, the Xperia XZ1, the Xperia XZ1 Compact and the Xperia XZ1 Premium. The Japanese tech giant is reportedly planning to release the update anytime between September and November.

Sony has a relatively decent track record when it comes to software updates but its sales numbers have been too low in recent times to get it any significant attention. Samsung, the leader in the smartphone business, sells over 200 million smartphones every year but its track record with rolling out timely updates isn’t among the best in the industry. To recall, Android 9 Pie was first showcased at Google I/O 2018 and was subsequently made available in the form of a beta. The update brings a new gesture-based user interface, revamped icons and rounded interface across the board.

One of the central features with Android 9 Pie is Digital Wellbeing, which shows the amount of time you unlock your device, the number of notifications received during the day. It also lets you see screen time across applications and use wind down to enable DND and activate greyscale on the device.

Android 9 Pie is not a major revamp but it brings a lot of system level enhancements that will improve user experience. The core idea is to make users aware of what they do with their smartphones and help them take back control.
