Sony PlayStation VR, the virtual reality accessory has managed to cross 1 million sales as per latest reports by Sony. The device launched in 2016 and just in a year has managed to achieve sales targets. Though the adoption of the virtual reality technology to believed to be relatively slow, Sony’s sales figures are certainly encouraging for the segment. PSVR has made a name for itself in the market, owing mainly to the high level of following other PlayStation devices like PS4 and PS4 Pro enjoy. There have also been a whole lot of games created and developed for virtual reality, making the offering more interesting. There is now a wide range of content and games in different genres for PSVR. The Sony PSVR has managed to surpass expected sales figures in a relatively short time since launch. Another strong point for the PSVR is the pricing in comparison with the competing devices. Sony competes with the HTC Vive and Facebook Oculus Rift in the VR segment. Of the lot, the PSVR is the most affordable option that also supports all the functionalities of the other two. PSVR comes with the PS Pro at a bundle price of Rs 41,990 on launch in India. The PSVR is directly linked to PS4, helping the device automatically reach out to 60 million PS4 users. As per latest reports by IDC, Sony shipped nearly 2 million VR headsets in the first quarter of 2017 alone, surpassing all previous sales numbers. Speaking to Reuters, Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment in Japan and Asia said, “We are boosting production and a supply shortage should be solved accordingly. I believe that VR technology is the (greatest) innovation since the birth of television. VR allows you to travel to World Heritage sites or to space while staying at home. It’s like a time machine or a door to anywhere.”
With the upcoming E3, Sony is expected to make some announcements for fanboys. Sony recently announced a limited edition Gold PS4 with a matching controller that will be available online starting June 9. While Nintendo and Microsoft are expected to make announcements at E3, Sony has taken a backseat this year. There have been reports of PS5 coming in 2018, though it might be wise to take the leak with a pinch of salt as 2018 is too early bearing Sony’s tradition to skip more than a few years between each PS4 edition launch. However, there might be announcements in the realm of VR in the meanwhile.
