Sony launched its flagship Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact at Mobile World Congress in late February. Now, the Japanese technology major has silently added another smartphone to the lineup in the form of Xperia XZ2 Premium. As the name implies, the XZ2 Premium is more premium than the standard Xperia XZ2 and will go against Samsung Galaxy S9+, Apple iPhone X and Huawei P20 Pro. In terms of design, the Xperia XZ2 Premium mimics the design first seen on Xperia XZ2 duo launched in February. However, it is an upgrade in every other area, be it the display or the camera. The highlight of the Xperia XZ2 Premium is its 4K HDR display, which is the highest resolution screen ever put on a smartphone. It also features a new dual rear camera system with support for high sensitivity that rivals some of the compact shooters from the company. Sony was rumored to launch the Xperia XZ2 Premium at Mobile World Congress, but seemed to have delayed it. The smartphone can be seen as Sony’s last ditch effort to stay competitive against the likes of Samsung and Apple in the premium smartphone segment. Apple and Samsung have a duopoly in premium smartphone market, and their closest competitors LG, Sony and HTC have lost out in the past few months. This Xperia XZ2 Premium, however, could bring fresh life to Sony’s struggling mobile division.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Specifications and Price

The Xperia XZ2 Premium features curved 3D glass like other Xperia XZ2 smartphones with a mirror-like finish on the back. It sports a modern design with 5.8-inch display surrounded by thinner bezels, and supporting a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. The 4K display supports high-dynamic range, and has a pixel density of 759 pixels per inch. The smartphone comes in chrome black and chrome silver colors that change when exposed to light.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage. It also supports expandable storage up to 400GB via microSD card slot. With Xperia XZ2 Premium, Sony has also tweaked the camera setup to offer better imaging experience in low-light scenario.

The smartphone features Motion Eye dual camera system with a combination of 19-megapixel color sensor, and a 12-megapixel black and white sensor. Sony is using large sized dual sensors and dedicated AUBE fusion image signal processor for faster processing of low-light images. The new ISP is in addition to the memory-stacked image sensor, which helps native processing and reduce noise.

To further enhance low-light imaging, the Xperia XZ2 Premium supports high sensitivity up to ISO 51200 for photos and ISO 12800 for video. The ultra-high sensitivity settings is usually found only on professional interchangeable lens camera systems. Like its predecessor, the Xperia XZ2 Premium also shoots super slow-motion videos at 960fps in Full HD resolution in addition to shooting standard 120fps slow-motion videos.

Like all other smartphone cameras, the Xperia XZ2 Premium also supports portrait mode that adds artistic bokeh effect to the images. Sony is taking a page from Huawei’s Leica-based camera system by adding black and white sensor and offering option to shoot in monochrome. For selfies, there is a 13-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture, 5-axis stabilization and display flash setting.

In terms of connectivity, the Xperia XZ2 Premium supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS and 4G LTE. It features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and supports high-resolution audio. It runs Android Oreo out-of-the-box, and is backed by a 3,540mAh battery. Other features includes wireless charging and IP68 water and dust resistance. There is no word on its pricing just yet, but Sony says it will be available globally from summer of 2018.
