Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 855, its flagship processor for next year at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii early today. Now, a new report suggests that Sony and not Samsung will be the first brand to launch a smartphone powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor.

In the past, Sony has been rather slow when it comes to adopting newest technologies. With Xperia XZ4, Sony doesn’t want to be left behind and could do so by launching the world’s first smartphone with a Snapdragon 855 SoC. A lot will, however, depend on when the device becomes commercially available for purchase in the market.

It is almost confirmed that all the flagship smartphones launching next year starting at Mobile World Congress 2019 will be powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC. It was earlier speculated that Xiaomi Mi 9 will be the first major smartphone with that chipset. Samsung Galaxy S10, OnePlus 7, LG G8 and Moto Z4 are expected to be other devices powered by the new Snapdragon flagship mobile platform.

The Snapdragon 855 is the first mobile platform from Qualcomm based on the 7nm process, and uses a TSMC process as opposed to Samsung process in the past. The San Diego-based semiconductor company is not revealing every piece of information right away but the big new feature is support for 5G networks. At Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm showcased a reference design connected to live 5G network from Verizon and AT&T.

A leak from tipster Ice Universe has revealed that Sony will not be using an ultrasonic or in-display fingerprint sensor on the smartphone. The Xperia XZ4 is confirmed to come with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor similar to its predecessor. The leaks claim Xperia XZ4 will feature a 6.55-inch display with 21:9 aspect ratio. There will be 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 256GB storage, and a 3,900mAh battery.

The tipster also claims triple rear camera system on the Xperia XZ4, and update image sensors. There is not much known beyond that, but Sony could once again rival Samsung if it delivers the first Snapdragon 855 smartphone.
