The impeding launch of the Sony Xperia Z was long prophesized before it actually became a reality today at CES. The device was leaked left, right and center and some gadget blogs even put it through a review process even at a prototype stage, but here we are and for the first time we can say that Sony has launched a flagship that has a decent chance because it is speced on a level footing with its competitors.
We say that with good reason, because the Xperia Z is a top of the line product in every way possible. It has a 5-inch LCD display with a 1080p resolution that totals to 441PPi and is coupled with Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine II. Underneath the hood, the Xperia Z has the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of memory, NFC, LTE, Bluetooth, a micro-SD card slot and a 2,330-mAh battery that comes with a software based stamina mode for better battery endurance.
Returning to the extremities of the device, there is 13-megapixel camera on the back that has the latest Sony Exmor RS sensor. Like the new Tegra 4 chipset, Sony is gung-ho about HDR. The Xperia Z camera can perform video HDR on the fly as it can take triple exposures simultaneously. Like the HTC smartphones, it can also shoot pictures while taking videos and the camera can shoot a burst mode at 10fps for pictures in 9-megapixels.
The Xperia Z comes of as a block, but yet from the looks of the press shots it looks unmistakably impressive. Both sides of the device are covered in Gorilla Glass and Sony touts that it is waterproof and dust proof and has IP55 and IP57 certifications. It’s also a rather svelte device at a thickness of 7.9mm and a weight of 140 grams.
The Xperia Z runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on top of which there is a Sony skin. Purists will obviously prefer a skin free Android experience but that rarely happens, but the good news is that Sony has historically provided a light Android skin, though that can always change.
Sony says that it will launch the Xperia Z globally at the end of Q1, but it has not revealed any pricing information. That said, we can expect it to price in excess of $550 or Rs 30,000 considering the spec it commands.
