Remember the Sony Xperia Z tablet? It was launched at MWC in February and later when Sony launched the Xperia Z smartphone in India, it said that it will be launching the tablet in May. It looks like the device is coming very soon to Indian shores as the device is now up for pre-order with various online retailers in the country for Rs 44,990. According to the listings, the device will ship in the first week of June. While, this may sound steep when compared to the iPad, we think that this may not be the official price of the device, and it could be priced slightly lower. For those who don t know the Xperia Z tablet is latest foray into the Android tablet market, and it borrows a lot of specs and features from the Xperia Z smartphone. The tablet features a 10.1-inch 1080p display that is powered by the mobile Bravia engine. Under the hood, just like the Xperia Z smartphone there is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset humming at 1.5GHz, which is supplemented by 2GB of RAM. There is 32GB of storage, a microSD card slot, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and it has a large 6,000 mAh battery. There is also a 8.1-megapixel rear camera and a 2.2-megapixel front facing camera. It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Notably, it shares the same design language as the Xperia Z smartphone to the extent that it even shares its signature power button and also is water resistant and dustproof.
Sony also claims that it is the slimmest and lightest tablet in the world at 6.9mm and weighs just 495 grams. When we checked out the product in March, we were mighty impressed with the product, but if its priced as high as Rs 44,990, then we feel it will have a tough time competing with the likes of the Apple iPad which anyways dominates the high-end tablet segment.
