With Android smartphones getting bigger by the day, Sony’s Xperia Z3 Compact is one of the few smartphones that maintains some kind of sanity. It is for this reason; the smartphone is described as the iPhone of the Android world. Speaking of which, Apple’s new iPhone 6 is now available in India as well, and not surprisingly comparisons are being made between the two. We compare the two smartphones on the basis of their specifications and features. Also Read - Sony PlayStation 5 games launching in Aug, Sept that we are excited to play
In terms of size the smartphones are quite closely matched. The Xperia Z3 Compact features dimensions of 127.3×64.9×8.6mm, while the iPhone 6 measures 128.1x67x6.9mm. They are also evenly matched in terms of weight, with both weighing in at 129 grams. Also Read - Sony PS5 to be restocked on July 26 in India
As for display size, the smartphones are again closely matched. The Xperia Z3 Compact flaunts a 4.6-inch display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, and a density of 319ppi. The iPhone 6, on the other hand, has a slightly bigger 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1334×750 pixels and a density of 326ppi.
Both the smartphones have enough power to run most apps smoothly. Sony’s smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz, and paired with 2GB of RAM. Apple’s smartphone is powered by the latest A8 dual-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM.
The Xperia Z3 Compact has 16GB of storage on offer, while the iPhone 6 offers three storage variants — 16GB, 64GB and 128GB.Sony’s smartphone however has an advantage of microSD card support that can be used to expand the internal storage.
On paper Sony’s smartphone has the better set of cameras with a 20.7-megapixel snapper at the back featuring ISO 12,800 and capable of shooting videos at 4K, supplemented with a 2.2-megapixel selfie camera at the front. The iPhone 6 features an 8-megapixel iSight camera on the back capable of shooting full HD videos, and a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime camera on the front. Sony has also included a bunch of software add-ons including Face In to click creative selfies, AR Fun, which is an Augmented reality mode, TimeShift, and Multi camera wherein multiple Xperia devices can be used to click a photo from different angles.
This is another department where Sony’s smartphone trumps the iPhone 6. It features a 2,600mAh battery, which is much more than what is offered on the iPhone 6 (1,810mAh). Sony claims the battery can last up to two days, and we agree with that claim. While reviewing the smartphone, the battery lasted for close to two days with moderate usage of an hour of calls, two hours of Internet browsing and two email accounts. We got through one day on a single charge even after doubling the voice calling and Internet browsing duration.
The Xperia Z3 Compact runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and Sony has already announced that it will be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop soon. The iPhone 6, on the other hand, runs on the latest iOS 8. It will also be updated to iOS 8.1, which will start rolling out next week.
The iPhone 6 features a fingerprint scanner integrated into the home button. The Xperia Z3 Compact boasts IP65/68 certification that makes it resistant to water and dust. The smartphone can survive underwater up to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. What’s more, the smartphone’s camera also works underwater.
