Sony launched the Xperia Z3 Compact today for a whopping Rs 44,990. The Xperia Z1 Compact, on the other hand, was launched in India last year for Rs 36,990, but is now available on a few Indian e-commerce sites for as low as Rs 29,990.
Size and design
In terms of size, the two smartphones are almost similar, but the Xperia Z3 Compact is slimmer at 8.6mm and also weighs less at 129 grams. In comparison, the Xperia Z1 Compact is 9.5mm thick and weighs 137 grams. As for design, both the smartphones follow Sony s OmniBalance design language and are almost identical to look at.
While the smartphones are identical in size, Sony has managed to fit in a bigger display on the new Xperia Z3 Compact. The new smartphone has a 4.6-inch, while the older device flaunts a 4.3-inch display. Both however have the same resolutions display 720p.
Sony hasn’t made any significant upgrades as far as the camera megapixels are concerned. The maximum ISO sensitivity setting has been bumped up from 6,400 to 12,800, making the Xperia Z3 Compact even more capable in low-light conditions. The lens has changed too. Where the Xperia Z1 Compact has a lens with an equivalent focal length of 27mm, the Z3 Compact goes a bit wider with a 25mm ‘G’ Lens. There’s a minor upgrade to the front camera, from 2-megapixel to 2.2-megapixel.
Power and storage
The Xperia Z3 Compact is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, while the older Xperia Z1 Compact is powered by a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor. The two processors are paired with 2GB of RAM.
On the storage front, the two smartphones feature 16GB internal storage. Both the phones also have a microSD card slot to expand the storage.
Software and extras
On the software front, the Xperia Z3 Compact runs on the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat, while the Xperia Z1 Compact runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
As is the case with most of Sony s smartphones, both the compact devices too boast water and dust proofing. The Xperia Z3 Compact however has one unique feature called PS4 Remote Play, which essentially lets you use the smartphone as a remote screen to connect to and control your games on PS4.
