Sony finally launched the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Premium and the Xperia Z5 Compact at its IFA 2015 event in Berlin last night. With all these smartphones, Sony is trying to bring the same flagship experience to 4.6-inch, 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch form factor. Specifications and features: They are quite identical in terms of size and dimensions, but the Xperia Z5 Compact takes a small leap with improved specifications. Both these smartphones flaunt a 4.6-inch IPS LCD HD (1280x720pixel) display with scratch-resistant glass and oleophobic coating to keep fingerprints away. Under the hood, the Xperia Z5 compact is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor paired with Adreno 430 GPU and 2GB of RAM whereas the Xperia Z3 Compact is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor paired with Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. The new smartphone comes with 32GB of onboard storage, expandable up to 200GB using a microSD card. Its predecessor came with 16GB of onboard storage, expandable up to 128GB using a microSD card.
On the photography front, the Xperia Z5 Compact comes with a slightly higher resolution 23-megapixel sensor with LED flash and a 5-megapixel front facing camera. On the other hand, the Xperia Z3 Compact sports a 20.7-megapixel sensor rear camera with LED flash and 2.2-megapixel front facing unit. The main camera on both smartphones can record 4K videos, whereas the front-facing unit can record 1080p videos.
The battery capacity on both smartphones is pretty close, while the Xperia Z5 Compact featuring a 2,700mAh non-removable battery; the Z3 Compact is equipped with a slightly lower 2,600mAh battery. They also support Quick Charge 2.0 feature that can charge the battery from 0-60 percent in 30 minutes.
Coming to the connectivity options, both smartphones support 4G LTE network, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth and USB host among others. On the software front, the Xperia Z5 Compact runs on Android Lollipop 5.1.1 out-of-the-box, whereas the Z3 compact runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
One of the talking points of the Xperia Z5 Compact is the fingerprint scanner that is integrated into the power button on the side. The new smartphone also has the Xperia logo embossed on the left side of the panel. In terms of design, Sony has retained their OmniBalance language and other prominent features of Xperia “Z” series, including the IP65 / IP68 certification for water and dust protection.
