It may not generate as much buzz in the mobile industry as it once used to, but Sony’s smartphone division is very much alive and kicking. Despite trailing rivals (in both premium and mid-range segments) for quite a while, the Japanese technology major continues to launch innovative smartphones.
Earlier this year, Sony Chairman Kaz Hirai had confirmed that the company would continue to launch smartphones under the Xperia brand. Upholding that promise, the company has now all but confirmed that it’ll be launching new Xperia-branded smartphones soon.
Sony Xperia recently posted a teaser video via its official Twitter handle. The 14-second video doesn’t show anything, except for an animated Xperia logo, along with the date 30.04.2018 and the hashtag #SonyIFA.

Doing the math, it’s easy to deduce that the new Xperia smartphones (and possibly even accessories) are coming at IFA 2018, Europe’s biggest consumer electronics show, which is set to commence from August 30 in Berlin.
Watch: Sony Xperia XZ2 First Impressions
It’s quite likely that the company will announce the XZ3 and XA3 line-ups at IFA 2018. A purported image of the upcoming Xperia XZ3 leaked recently, highlighting a design that’s nearly identical to the current Xperia XZ2. It’s good then, that we won’t have to wait much before Sony makes the devices official.
An unknown Sony smartphone, most likely to be the Xperia XA3, was recently spotted on Geekbench, complete with specifications. If the listing is to be believed, the yet-to-be-announced Sony Xperia XA3 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 SoC. It’ll also pack 6GB of RAM and runs Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box, with an update to Android 9.0 Pie expected to arrive sometime later.
