Spotify CEO Daniel Ek talks about partnership with Samsung and seamless music experience

Spotify and Samsung partnership announcement was one of the most unexpected parts for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 launch event.

Samsung announced its partnership with online music streaming service Spotify at its Unpacked 2018 event last week. The company announced its latest flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 along with Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Home, and Fortnite Beta for Android at the launch event. Details for the Note 9 had already leaked out on the internet and rumors about the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Home, Fortnite Beta was already floating in on the internet. However, Spotify and Samsung partnership announcement was one of the most unexpected parts for the launch event.

Now, days after the announcement, Daniel Ek, the CEO for Spotify issued a release explaining details about the partnership. According to the release, Galaxy smartphones will come with pre-installed Spotify app on “Samsung Smart Switch” which a software by Samsung to transfer. As soon as users launch the Spotify app, they will be prompted to connect their Samsung account with their Spotify account. Ek went on to add that users will be able to play music on their Samsung Smart TVs, and Galaxy Home smart speaker. He pointed out that Galaxy Home will specifically look at Spotify for results when users search for music while giving Samsung Music second preference.

According to the statement, Spotify has also added “location-based” features where users can set the app to switch the playback of the music to their smartphone as soon as they leave a room where the Smart TV or smart speaker was playing the music.

Ek clarified that Spotify is able to detect Samsung devices over a Wi-Fi network and also allow users to control playback of music from the lock screen of the smartphone. This partnership is likely to give Spotify a larger platform to increase its active users while providing Samsung with a healthy and established platform that can rival Google Play Music and Apple Music.
