According to the latest leaked renders, the upcoming Google Pixel 3 XL will remain on the single-camera setup bandwagon. A tweet by user @UniverseIce, a known leaker on the micro-blogging platform, shows renders for a protective case for the Google Pixel 3 XL, which shows cutouts for a single-camera setup at the back of the case. This suggests that for the second year running, Google will be ignoring the dual-camera and triple-camera trend that is currently the norm in the smartphone industry. The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were initially widely criticized for sticking to a single-camera setup, particularly when major competitors including Samsung, Apple and even OnePlus were already making their smartphones with dual-camera setups. However, Google has been able to use AI to offer the most common benefit of a dual-camera setup – depth effect photography – even on its smartphones with single-camera setups at the rear. Furthermore, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are currently regarded as having among the best smartphone cameras in the industry. This latest leak suggests that this method will continue even with this year’s Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.
Other smartphone makers such as Apple and Samsung have adopted the dual-camera setup on their larger variants, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, and the Samsung Galaxy S9+, while the smaller variants (the iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S9) have single-camera setups. Google was initially expected to go with a similar approach, but it now seems that both the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will have a single camera sensor at the back.

The leaked render also showcases a notched screen on the Google Pixel 3 XL, along with a significant chin below the screen. The back of the phone will have a fingerprint sensor in roughly the same position as it can be found on the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The leaked case in the render is unspecified, but appears to be a generic clear plastic protective bumper case.
