In 2017, the phrase ‘Netflix and Chill’ received more meanings than one. In the beginning of this year, Netflix had 4.2 million active users in India. In August this year, Netflix reported a growth in user base to 5.37 million in just eight months. Interestingly, the time spent by viewers on Netflix has grown by more than 150 percent at 1,563.5 million minutes in August 2017, compared to same period last year. Keeping aside big numbers too, how many people do you know around yourself who do not wait for the weekend, so they could binge?
Considering Netflix pretty much brought the trend of binge watching shows and movies on online video streaming platforms to India, here’s a look at how our year has been with Netflix. What we watched more, how much we watched, and when we watched it.
Netflix reveals that in 2017, subscribers around the world watched more than 140 million hours of TV shows, movies, documentaries and more per day. That’s about one billion hours per week (in case you were wondering). India saw a massive rise in bingeing this year, and a whole new community of binge racers emerged.
Apparently, the average global member watched 60 movies on Netflix this year. A Netflix-er in India watched The SpongeBob SquarePants movie 171 times in 2017. And the most popular day to stream in India was October 29, 2017.
Interestingly, Netflix reveals that Indians are faster at bingeing than anybody else. It reveals Indians, on an average, binge through a TV show in three days, which is a day lesser to the global average of four days. While Indians are amongst the top mobile downloaders in the world for Netflix content, TV devices continue to be important for streaming, with more than a third or 34 percent of Netflix viewing hours in India being through connected TVs.
There was variety in how we binged as well. We binged almost anywhere and everywhere, out of the living room, in public. Netflix says that Indians got so hooked this time that that we cheated on our streaming partners, while there were some shows that we only streamed with a friend or a partner.
In the category of shows that India got cheating, Narcos remains on the top, followed by Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, Mindhunter, and Black Mirror. Orange is the New Black, Riverdale, and The Crown are also in this list. Contradictorily, Stranger Things was also the show that got people watching the series together. Also in the list are 13 Reasons Why, Chef’s Table, Riverdale, Star Trek: Discovery, Fuller House, and Gilmore Girls.
Netflix has also categorized some shows that Indians really devoured this year, with spending more than two hours a day in catching up. My Only Love Song, 13 Reasons Why, Marvel’s Iron Fist, The Mist, and Shooter, are some of them.
