Paralympic Games officially began in Rome in 1960, and after the Summer Games of 1976, the first Summer Paralympics took place in the same year. Since 1988, the Summer Paralympics were hosted in the same venues as the Summer Olympics and the tradition lives on till date. This year, Rio will be hosting the Summer Paralympics making it the first Latin and South American city to host the Summer Games. The Paralympic Games are hosted for athletes who are disabled but still have the talent to compete in different games and sports. The Paralympics hosts different games and sports starting from Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Cycling, Powerlifting, Swimming, Tennis and more.
This year s Paralympics have however caught the wrong spotlight with reports citing poor funding as Philip Craven, president of the International Paralympic Committee told The Associated Press, This is the worst situation that we ve ever found ourselves in at Paralympic movement. We were aware of difficulties, but we weren t aware it was as critical as this. Lack of financing will result in scaled back venues, seating and staffing. The reason behind this, the committee said was because of slow tickets and sponsorship sales. However, the Rio government came to the rescue with $46.3 million and the federal government has also agreed a sum of $30.7 million which Craven thinks will help in making the Summer Paralympics 2016 a success. The Rio Olympics 2016 were also challenged with a rough start but managed to pull off a successful Olympic Games and the Paralympics seem to be following suit.
