Tencent has launched its own pair of smart glasses that look very much similar to Spectacles from Snap. Tencent is China’s biggest internet company, and is primarily known for its WeChat communication app. The new glasses from Tencent called Weishi smart glasses have a camera at the front, so users can record themselves and the idea seems to be similar to the Snap Spectacles.

Snap’s Spectacles debuted as company’s most ambitious hardware product when it went on sale in the US. However, the product has failed in terms of sales, and reports indicate that Snap lost nearly $40 million in unsold pairs. It is not clear how Tencent aims to overcome those limited sales of Spectacles with its Weishi glasses.

In terms of design, one of the key changes is that these Weishi smart glasses do not have a yellow ring to highlight the camera. Instead, these glasses sport an all black finish, and can be described as similar to that of second generation Spectacles. Tencent’s Weishi smart glasses, mean ‘micro shows’ in Mandarin and is named after company’s video application that works similar Vine, which recently shut down.

According to The Verge, Tencent’s Weishi lags behind TikTok (formerly Musical.ly), which remains the leader in the short video format. The company is launching these new glasses as it hopes more users will record short videos and upload to Weishi and could boost the popularity of the platform among young users.

Weishi told the publication that the product is not officially released yet, but there is already an app that the glasses pair to via Bluetooth. In terms of specifications, there is an 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting 720p or 1080p videos. It also supports remote shooting with different modes and ability to broadcast live from the glasses.

Tencent is currently Snap’s biggest investor, and has been expanding into segments like gaming, as it reaches saturation in terms of users on WeChat. The Weishi glasses from the company will be available on November 11, which is Alibaba’s Singles Day, the largest shopping festival in China.
