Tesla 'hoping' to launch in India this summer: Elon Musk

Tesla will be debuting in India soon.

Here’s a big news for all car fans out there — Tesla could be coming to India this year. What’s really exciting is that this news comes from none other than CEO Elon Musk himself. Musk revealed about the company’s potential plans via a tweet.

While exciting, this isn’t really the first time we are hearing about Tesla’s plans for India. Last year, post the launch of Model 3, Musk announced that Tesla would enter the Indian market before production starts for its latest vehicle. He also said that the company will set up a pan-India supercharger network. When you take these comments into consideration, it is quite clear that Tesla is serious about foraying into the Indian market.

It doesn’t come as a huge surprise why Musk is serious about India considering the automotive industry here is worth $74 billion today. At the current rate, the industry is poised to become the third-largest auto market by the end of the current fiscal. The government too is serious about electric cars, and it is working towards making India a 100 percent electric vehicle nation by 2030. Back in September 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Tesla headquarters in the US. Modi and Musk discussed Tesla’s developments in battery technology, energy storage and renewable energy, and the positive implications of the innovation for India.

Back in April 2016, Tesla unveiled the Model 3, which is the company’s most affordable vehicle yet. Prices for the Model 3 starts from $35,000, which is approximately Rs 23 lakhs. The final price in India though will be higher when you take into consideration the hefty import duties for cars. ALSO READ: Elon Musk outlines Tesla’s master plan to dominate Uber and the world

Tesla claims the Model 3 can run up to 215 miles or 346 kilometers on full charge. It plans to launch different variants for the car with the base model capable of hitting 0-60Mph in just under six seconds. The car comes with storage space at the rear and front, and it will also boast the “autopilot” features available in Tesla’s existing models.
