Apple is reportedly looking at using its own Mac CPUs for the upcoming MacBook Pro. However, placing an all-new candidate for the core of the newer laptops, Intel announced a new high-end CPU that has the potential to make it to the 15-inch MacBook Pro refresh.

This week, Intel introduced the new six-core i9 processor which has been designed for high-end premium laptop series. The Core i9-8950HK is a mobile version of Intel’s desktop processor, offering six cores and twelve threads. If we look at the current 15-inch MacBook Pro, it is powered by a quad-core i7 while the 13-inch model is still at dual-core processors. With the six core processing power, the Core i9 also offers maximum turbo frequency of 5.6GHz, compared to the maxed out MacBook Pro at 4.1GHz, 9to5Mac reports.

The first-ever Intel Core i9 processors for mobiles and laptops are aimed at a richer gaming and content creation experience on-the-go, which also includes 4K video editing, making them a considerable choice for the MacBook Pro refresh. Intel claims that it is the highest-performance laptop processor ever built by the company.

The new 8th-gen Intel Core i9, i7, and i5 processors for laptops are based on the Coffee Lake platform and leverage the 14nm++ process technology, which allows them to deliver up to 41 percent more frames per second in gameplay or edit 4K video up to 59 percent faster than the previous generation with same discrete graphics.

As the report notes, the Core i9 will also resolve one common complaint of MacBook Pro owners – less RAM. The MacBook Pro is limited to 16GB RAM because the current generation of processors are limited to LPDDR3 RAM. With the new Core i9 processor, it will be possible to crunch 32GB of RAM into the MacBook Pro.

Even as Core i9 makes the best bet for the MacBook Pro refresh, it will be interesting if Apple continues to incorporate Intel’s chips. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly looking at replacing Intel chips from its future Macs with its own chips. The company is already manufacturing ARM-based chips to use in its Macs for quite some time now, but these chips mostly back the main Intel CPU when laptops are in the Power Nap session. However, the company is now looking at replacing the Intel chips in Macs starting as early as 2020.

Designing its own chips will allow Apple to accelerate the production of its new models and reduce dependence on Intel’s roadmap. The move is also seen as having a potential blow to Intel which helped Apple make Mac a success.

Meanwhile, Asus launched its GT75 Titan gaming laptop this week. It is said to be the world’s first gaming laptop to feature Intel Core i9 processors with fully unlocked hexa-core performance.
