The curious case of missing water resistance from Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus

Motorola says customers aren’t really considering water and dust resistance as a priority feature for buying a new smartphone.

It is not very often when a main USP of any device is completely removed when an upgrade is announced, unless you are Motorola. The Lenovo-owned company yesterday announced its new generation Moto G smartphones, the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus. The Moto G4 series is an upgrade over the predecessors in terms of hardware and design elements. But it does not feature the dust and water-resistance capabilities, to be precise doesn t have any IP certifications. Instead it has nano coating that makes it water repellent, and can survive moisture or splashes of water, but cannot survive being immersed in water. But why will Motorola remove one of USPs from its new smartphones? Even as slimmer and metal-clad phones are getting increasingly popular, Motorola smartphones have remained arguably bulky to focus on sturdiness. The dust and water-resistance capabilities have been one of the standard features on all Moto smartphones. Last year s Moto G smartphones came with IPX7 certification, which the device could be immersible in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. The company had extensively advertised this feature. But this time around with the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, there s a big focus on making the devices lighter and slimmer. The Moto G4 Plus has 7.87mm thickness, and is slimmer than the Moto G 3rd generation, which is 11.6 mm thick. Evidently, the company wanted the device to look slimmer and at par with the competitors such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and LeEco Le 1s, which have 8.7 mm and 7.6 mm thickness respectively.

While form factor could have been the main reason, Motorola told BGR India that the customers weren t really enthusiastic about the waterproofing feature and it wasn t the top feature considered when they were looking for a new smartphone. The sentiment is echoed by Moto Product Expert Laton Honeyghan, who told usSwitch that the Moto G4 is “dust-repellent with a splash guard, which means it ll take a splash and rain. It s still good with that. But it s not IPX7-certified.” The expert also acknowledged that the decision to remove the feature was because it would mean adding gromits and nuts and bolts that adds extra bulk to it.

As said earlier, the Moto G4 series comes with major upgrade over the predecessors. Interestingly, the company has launched multiple variants of the smartphone – Moto G4 and two Moto G4 Plus variants. The new smartphones comes with 5.5-inch full HD display as compared to last year s 5-inch 720p display. For performance, the smartphones run Snapdragon 617 as compared to last year s Snapdragon 410. The Moto G4 Plus comes in 2GB + 16GB and 3GB + 32GB expandable storage. Also, the smartphone supports expandable storage up to 128GB. The Moto G4 has 1GB of RAM and doesn t have expandable storage.

While the base Moto G4 has last year s 13-megapixel camera, the Moto G4 Plus comes with 16-megapixel camera. The camera on the Moto G4 now supports a Pro mode, giving customers more and manual controls on images. The Moto G4 Plus is available via Amazon with prices starting from Rs 13,499. The availability details about the Moto G4 will be announced later.
