With the OnePlus 6 months (or possibly even weeks) away from launch, the rumor mill is on overdrive. We’ve already seen a handful of leaks from tipsters, including the possibility of a woodgrain-finish variant for the new phone. Even the recently launched Oppo R15 hints at what we can expect from the OnePlus 6. However, today’s coverage isn’t a rumor or leak; it comes directly from the co-founder of OnePlus himself. Carl Pei, in an interaction with The Verge, confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will come with a notch, just like the Apple iPhone X and a handful of Android devices launched this year. The company also shared the first official image of the OnePlus 6, which shows off its notch. As you can see in the image above, the notch is significantly smaller than on the Apple iPhone X, with the components closely packed into the narrow space. The phone’s LED notification light, proximity sensor, earpiece and front camera are placed on the notch in that order, with strips of screen-space on either side. The co-founder of OnePlus further elaborates that the notch on the OnePlus 6 is more carefully designed, and has the software working better with it. The point of the notch is to give the user more screen space, and move the notification and status bar to the area alongside the notch. The OnePlus software team has tested the top 1,000 apps on the Google Play Store for compatibility with its software and notch, and has the clock shifted to the left to make more room for status icons. He even shared the exact size of the notch 19.616×7.687 mm.
So far, we know that the OnePlus 6 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, and will come with at least 8GB of RAM. The phone will also definitely have a 3.5mm jack. OnePlus is known for taking user feedback into consideration when designing its phones, and has integrated a lot of features on the basis of feedback received through the company’s official forum. The phone is expected to launch in the coming months, with May or June seeming the most likely timeframe for the phone’s launch.
