On HBO s TV series, Silicon Valley, participants had to create a Shazam for Food app. While the initial challenge was SeeFood, an app that could identify food and give the app user more details regarding the dish, what it turned out to be is completely different and hilarious. The final app created by Erlich and Jian-Yang, after managing to get thousands of dollars in funding, does solve the purpose. Partially. It can recognise food but only hotdogs! The ‘Not Hotdog’ app, claims to correctly identify whether there is a hotdog present or not. Also Read - Warning! What else? Well, nothing. That is pretty much all the app does. Place something before the phone and scan it and the app will tell you whether it is a hot dog or not. It does not analyse the dish or object if it is not a hotdog but just gives you a big red cross with a no. The app is up for downloads on the iOS App Store and is compatible with both, iPhone and iPad. There is no news of whether the makers will launch an Android version of the app. The reviews on the store are hilarious and cheeky with people lauding the ability of the app for correctly identifying the dish and saving them from much embarrassment! This is not the only ridiculous app in the market. Let us take a look at some other hilarious but completely pointless apps:
1. Watching Cute Girl (iOS)
If you want someone to keep looking at you all day, this is the app to download. The app does absolutely nothing but show you the picture of a “cute” Japanese girl who keeps looking at you, all day. The girl just keeps constantly staring at you. The Japanese girl does come with different facial expressions and has over 180 expressions. As per the description, if you get lucky, the girl might even say a few words to you! But erm, do you understand Japanese? Apart from creeping people out, there’s no real purpose this app serves. Are you buried deep, deep underground or in a room with no windows or doors? Or you simply have no clocks at home and are wondering when does night fall? This app will then come to the rescue. It does nothing except show whether it is light or dark outside. To the creator’s credit, it does not randomly throw up dark or not notifications. It’s a GPS based app which configures your current location, sunrise time and sunset time to give you results. To its credit, the answer is generally accurate!
This Keyboard replaces your normal keyboard and all you can type is Hodor. Of course, you can try font sizes and spacing but at the end of the day, all you get, irrespective of what you type is Hodor. The app is a paid app (Rs 58.70) and a great way to fool your friends. Additionally, you can long press for “maximum Hodor”, swipe left to “unhodor Hodor” (why would you do that?! or swipe right to delete a character. Set it as default in a friend’s phone and watch the fun! ALSO READ: Baahubali The Game crosses over a million downloads in India
4. Fan Cooler (iOS, Android)
In these sweltering summers, having a fan cooling app that actually cools you down seems like a blessing. However, this app (and ones similar to it) do absolutely nothing other than mimic a fan. While the iOS one does claim to “make your phone cool”, in reality, it only makes the sound of a fan and you can behave as if there’s a cool breeze blowing. There are multiple types of fans and different settings you can choose from.
5. Baith Jaiye! (Android)
Mimicking the first ever lady Speaker, Meira Kumar, in the Lok Sabha, this app does nothing but ask you to sit down. The app is ridiculous and can bring a real fun element in boring meetings or in arguments. The app has a high rating in the app store and despite the complete uselessness, has received positive reviews.
6. Counting Sleep Magic Sheep (iOS)
Having trouble falling asleep? This app counts sheep for you and makes you fall asleep. Traditionally, people have always counted sheep to fall asleep, with the monotonous counting sending the person off the bed easily. This app instead does it for you. All you do is stare at the display as the sheep go past one by one. There is a counter at the bottom of the screen to count the number of sheep gone past. Well, as staring at your mobile phone makes it more difficult to get sleep, this app might contradict its purpose than serving it.
