Tinder is now looking to move beyond dating and become more of a social platform. It has launched a new feature called Tinder Social, which allows users to have group chats and join in other groups for hanging out. Tinder Social is integrated in Tinder itself and it allows groups with one to three members to chat with each other and plan out activities. This feature was first tested in Australia and its success led to the official roll out in India, US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. How Tinder Social works
To begin with, you need to have the latest version of Tinder as the feature is integrated in the app itself. You get a list of users from your Facebook friends list with whom you can create a group. You can different status like Going to a concert tonight or Swipe right to hang out with us which any member of the group can select. You can also send GIFs which are pre-loaded in the chat box.
Groups of other people will keep popping up on the home page like the usual Tinder profiles do. And likewise you swipe right on the groups you want to join. If your group matches with another group, you can start chatting with the members. There is a separate tab to keep track of your own group and other groups you ve matched with.
The group chats get expired at noon the following day depending on the time zone of the group s creator. This is most probably because Tinder is focusing on immediacy rather meetings that have been planned well in advance.
You can be a member of only one group but you can match with more than one group at the same time. If the creator of the group leaves it then the group will expire and vice-versa if all the other members leave the group. Users who do not want to be added in these groups can turn the feature off by going to app’s settings.
Why you may not like Tinder Social
That said, not many are thrilled about Tinder Social. A Tinder user Amiy told BGR India that Tinder Social did not bring anything new to the plate as many groups matched with his but did not bother starting a conversation. This could depend on many factors but it just goes on to say how people aren t really using the feature and are probably doing it just for fun. A lot of people, especially those who are privacy conscious, may dislike their Tinder profiles being revealed to their Facebook friends.
But main concern remains Tinder’s own reputation as a hook-up platform. Experts have expressed concerns that Tinder Social may be considered as a group sex feature.
“Tinder is seen by many as being a hook-up site. So, it needs to be careful. By expanding in this direction, rather than becoming a more interesting social meeting service, it could be perceived as an orgy app,” BBC quotes Ben Wood from the CCS Insight consultancy as saying.
But Tinder apparently looks at it as an opportunity to become a social platform with greater user engagement. Also, with its roll out in India, which is one of its biggest markets, Tinder hopes to increase user base and overall growth.
That said, we re not sure how well this feature would play out as people in India are still very discreet about being a Tinder user. Would this feature pass over Tinder s status as hook-up platform to a social’ platform? Let us know your views in the comments section below.
