Top ten gadgets of CES 2013

The biggest consumer technology show on the planet wound up last week and while we recovered from our extensive coverage from CES 2013 it gave us ample time to look back and analyze the best of the show that will be relevant to India in the coming months. Yes, our list of top 10 gadgets from CES might have devices like the Oculus Rift or the Yota Phone that probably won’t launch here, but we believe these would trickle down in some form or other. We can see a homegrown brand replicate the Yota Phone concept. Read on for our list of the top 10 gadgets from CES 2013. Also Read - Samsung and LG confirm presence at in-person CES 2022

Nvidia Project Shield: Also Read - CES 2022 to return to in-person format: Organisers

Project Shield came out of nowhere. Literally. No one expected it, and more importantly it s not only a glorified game controller with a 5-inch display, but it also becomes the first device to be powered by the Nvidia Tegra 4 GPU. It s only in the beta stage but Nvidia is targeting a Q2 launch.

Sony Xperia Z:

The Xperia Z is the first Sony smartphone the company has “designed” after taking over the Sony Ericsson brand and by the looks of it is a very definition of Sony’s industrial design. Design aside, it packs a 5-inch 1080p display, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera that can shoot HDR videos on the fly, is waterproof and runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It has all the makings of a superphone that could give stiff competition to Apple and Samsung.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix:

The ThinkPad Helix has the making of the ultimate business notebook. It comes a svelte form-factor, a 11-inch 1080p display with 400-nits of brightness, Intel s new low-power core i7 processor, 256GB of SSD storage, NFC, 10 hours of battery life and the legendary ThinkPad keyboard. It is also the first ThinkPad to come with a touchscreen in a sort of hybrid form-factor. Users can also detach the screen to use it solely like a tablet. Is this a new beginning for the ThinkPad series or its end? Only time will tell.

Oculus Rift:

Oculus Rift has been described as the next big thing in gaming and with good reason as it bring the concept of virtual reality closer. It is basically a heads-up display that enables gamers to enter an immersive environment where they don t have any physical objects that obstruct the playing view and the user can manipulate their game character with a combination of joy-pad controls and motion sensors on the HUD.

Yota Phone:

The Yota Phone tackles the battery problem most smartphones face these days in a unique way. It has two displays, the rear one being an e-ink display. Specs wise it is up there with the best as it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is powered by a Qualcomm chipset. The rear e-ink panel can be used to consume glanceable content and notifications and apps will be designed for this display and the company plans on releasing an API. It indeed is an interesting concept and can help mitigate the battery problems most smartphone users go through these days considering e-ink barely consumes any power.

Panasonic 4K 20-inch tablet:

A 20-inch Windows 8 tablet with an incredible 4K resolution is enough to our jaws drop. If that wasn’t enough, it comes with a Photoshop certified stylus that reminds us of Samsung s S-Pen and it is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor, which of course is needed to power the insane resolution. This one will definitely catch the fancy of designers and architects.

Samsung s 85-inch floating 4K TV:

Samsung came to the 4K party with its big guns blazing. Its 85-inch 4K TV was the main highlight, boasting a beautiful floating design, a quad-core ARM Cortex A15 CPU and the frame that enables the floating design combines a powerful 120 watt 2.2 channel audio system.

Lenovo K900:

On the face of it the Lenovo K900 is another 5.5-inch phablet that strives to steal the phablet crown from the Galaxy Note II. But from the inside, it is powered by Intel s latest CloverTrail Plus CPU that promises class leading performance and battery life. The CPU is a big play for Intel s mobile ambitions, but apart from that it also has a 1080p display and uniquely users can switch between a stock Android Jelly Bean and a skinned Lenovo Android experience.

Philips Detachable soundbar:

Philips had a rather quiet CES, but it did manage to pull a rabbit out of the hat with its HTL9100, a first of its kind detachable sound-bar. Essentially users can use it like a traditional soundbar with virtual surround sound or detach the speaker for true 5.1 channel audio. Once detached the speakers operate wirelessly, so there is no wire clutter and it even has Bluetooth so that mobile products can stream audio.

Samsung Curved glass LED TV:

Curved glass has been the rage in mobile, but Samsung has managed to push the curved glass concept to the living room. The Curved glass LED TV manages to create a panorama effect so that the viewer gets a more immersive experience.
