This past weekend, showing confidence in UIDAI, TRAI chief R S Sharma shared his Aadhaar details on Twitter and challenged hackers to do him any harm that they could. Soon, a hacker gained access to his phone number, Gmail account, and also managed to deposit Re 1 in his account. Now, his daughter has reportedly received a threatening e-mail warning her of “regretful consequences if she didn’t respond”.

Two journalists working with The Wire were also marked in the e-mail, which also stated that Sharma’s back account with Punjab National Bank was “under imminent threat of being hacked”.

“By posting a challenge on social media, RS Sharma has turned out to be an embarrassment to the nation and put a bounty on his accounts for hackers. If you do not respond to this email in the next 24 hrs. The consequences would be regretful. Any tip off to law enforcement agencies, would be detrimental. You are advised to act wisely,” the email reads.

Further, the e-mail also mentions the repercussions if Kavita fails to comply with the instructions. The hacker said that a remote malware would be installed on Sharma’s smartphone, and all his communication would be intercepted and archived. Also, all his emails will be encrypted, and only after a ransom is paid, the hacker will decrypt it. In case Kavita fails to comply, the “details will be released to the media,” the e-mail warning says.

After the Twitter dare, Sharma’s Yahoo! and Gmail addresses, date of birth, frequent flyer number, WhatsApp display picture and mobile numbers have also been made public. The only question here is, Sharma being a government official, most details are already out in public, UIDAI said. So, it isn’t sure if the hacker gained access to the information from Aadhaar database or from somewhere else.
