Smartphones are an integral part of our lives. Given the time we spend with our devices, our efficiency and wellbeing is closely tied to them. The popular phone number lookup service and app Truecaller aims to change that. The revamped version of the app — Truecaller 8 — is now available on Android. In addition to a complete redesign, the app features a host of new features. BGR India spoke to Alan Mamedi co-founder and CEO, and Nami Zarrighalan co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Truecaller, respectively. According to Mamedi and Zarrighalan, on an average in India, Truecaller identified 2.2 billion calls each month. Users placed 568 million monthly calls using the Truecaller app. The app also identified 500 million spam calls monthly in India. Mamedi added that if we consider that the average time for each call is 40 seconds, Truecaller has saved Indians approximately 19,000 years of talk time. Time that would otherwise have been wasted. Sounds like precious moments wasted away in urban city traffic.
Truecaller now enables SMS
Truecaller s engine is now able to bring a sense of order to your messaging inbox. You could now ignore those messages claiming to help you shed 25kg without heavy exercising. Haven t we all been there? According to Zarrighalan, approximately 15 percent of all spam messages or roughly 1.2 trillion spam messages are sent yearly. That s time that could have otherwise been spent doing something productive, or better still, been battery time that could have been saved.
Flash Messaging saves you time
Truecaller 8 will come with a Flash Messaging feature that allows users to quickly respond to text conversation with other Truecaller users using pre-crafted messages. According to Mamedi, this could be via a shared location. Simply tap and share your coordinates with your loved one. Say you re traveling, and your spouse sends you a text enquiring about you. You could share your location. If the love blooms further, you could also add a heart emoticon, quips Mamedi.
Truecaller Pay: Bring it on, digital
After an eventful past couple of months, India has finally discovered the advantages of going digital, and use less cash. We have learned that cashless is still a distant goal. But less cash is here. And it doesn t have to be as complex as remembering multiple passwords as we learned from the BHIM and UPI apps. A single point interface could simplify our lives.
Thanks to a tie-up with ICICI Bank, Truecaller is now connected to the UPI system. Sending and receiving payments between Truecaller users is as simple as messaging. Just tap and send money without having to install multiple apps on your smartphone, says Zarrighalan.
Users can also recharge their prepaid mobile connection using the UPI interface within Truecaller app. Postpaid bill payments are not supported at this time. But could be a possibility in the future. The app also aggregates virtual payment addresses and ties them to contacts in your address book for added convenience. You no longer need to remember VPAs for your contacts.
NPCI would like to appreciate ICICI Bank and Truecaller for leveraging state-of-the-art UPI technology for enabling secure payments and bringing out innovative solution for customers. This remarkable development will encourage more large players in the ecosystem to adopt UPI faster, Dilip Asbe, COO at NPCI said.
Caller ID for feature phones
Thanks to a partnership with Airtel, consumers with feature phones would know details of the calling party. This is due to a feature at the network end, wherein Airtel can query the Truecaller database and send the notification to the feature phone just as if the number was saved on the user s address book.
Google Duo on Truecaller
Google s Duo video calling app is now closely integrated with Truecaller 8. And since Android devices will come pre-bundled with the Google Duo app, the Truecaller integration enables it to fetch relevant information and present it within the app interface. This allows users to view video call records on the default call logs on Truecaller 8. The convenience makes it easier for users to go back in time and find that video call with a team member or friend two days ago.
Focus on developers with TrueSDK
In addition to the above announcements, Truecaller would move towards being a more open platform with TrueSDK supporting iOS and the web. TrueSDK would enable digital brands to onboard, authenticate and verify users on apps and services. With support for Android, iOS and the web, Truecaller will move towards being platform agnostic.
