Truecaller today launched an update to its Android app that will enable users to subscribe to premium services. For a monthly subscription fee of Rs 55 or Rs 318 for six months users can get premium features for the world’s largest crowdsourced mobile phone directory. Under premium services, users will be able to see who’s viewed their profile. They can even see how many minutes ago someone saw it. Being a paid service, Truecaller will also remove ads and will give premium subscribers 30 contact requests at the start of every month. With these requests users can contact other Truecaller users by looking for their name in the directory. Truecaller will send a text message to them requesting for permission to allow the user to see their contact details. While Truecaller has always evoked privacy concerns but it has handled those concerns to some extent. Despite the privacy concerns, Truecaller has been a very popular app, especially in India, where local regulations have failed to curb the menace of spam and marketing calls.
